Search Results (Google/Yahoo) affected by malware and virus

In another thread, I found a step by step response to another problem & would appreciate something similar. This seems like the best forum ever.

When using FireFox & IE and doing a search on google/yahoo, the results are displayed but clicking on them directs me to another page (wrong address). Also Zonealarm updates seem to be blocked & AVG cannot seem to update. I suspect a virus/malware. How can I remove this and get back to normal operation as both my firewall & virus checker obviously did not detect this.
Step by step instructions would be really appreciated. i.e. check for … in regedit. remove following programs, etc.

Once I am back to normal operations, I then can update firewall/virus scanner & run a full PC check. Also, any recommendations on free application that can prevent this type of thing from happening again?

Free apps? I recomment Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Download, install, update and scan. It will clean your computer instantly.

I had a similar problem and have now resolved it.

I could see a rogue process in my task manager but it would reaappear everytime I removed it. File search in
Windows is useless as it would not locate the rogue file
and these rogue files seemed to be hidden. Setting
options in Windows seemed to make no difference. I still could not see the files or folders. Any ideas to view/find hidden files/folders for the future?

I finally resolved the underlying problem.

This will take some time but it worked for me.

BACKUP ALL IMPORTANT FILES TO DVD/CD. ANYTHING YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE BACK IT UP. THIS IS IMPORTANT. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK. NO GUARANTEES GIVEN. IT WORKED FOR ME BUT EVERY PC IS DIFFERENT.

Details below may remove files that you wanted. Don’t
keep any files that show as rogue but make a note of them. If you still need them afterwards, download them from reputable websites or restore from your backup if they are personal files. When you restore, triple scan for infection!!!

Download SpyBot Search&Destroy and Install (if not done so already)
    Don’t SCAN YET!!!

Download CCleaner and Install (if not done so already)
    Don’t SCAN YET!!!

Download ComboFix.exe . DO NOT INSTALL OR RUN YET!!!

PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT YOUR PC FROM THE INTERNET. REMOVE THE CABLE OR SWITCH THE ROUTER OFF.

Firstly, clean you internet Internet cache/temporary files/etc. This speeds things up for later

    Run SpyBot Search&Destroy.
Do a full scan with SpyBot Search&Sestroy.
This will probably NOT remove it but will get rid off other junk.

Run CCleaner and again do a full scan.
Also use the regisrty cleaner and run a full scan.
    Remove all entries it finds.
This will probably NOT remove it but will get rid off other junk.

Do a full scan of your system with your virus scanner. Remove all rogue entries it finds even if they are your favourite programs.
This will probably NOT remove it but will get rid off other junk.

    Reboot your PC

Final bit. You have now got rid of most junkware on your PC.
Run Combofix (It DOES NOT NEED AN INSTALL)
DO not run any other program now.
Run ComboFix. On slow PCs it may take a while so although you may not see anything, it will work. Be Patient. Follow instructions. THIS MAY REMOVE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE FILES AUTOMATICALLY. LET IT RUN.

This should resolve the problem. Let us know if it works.
