MBR: Alureon-K Rtk – This Rootkit is on my drive

Avast keeps on detecting a virus called MBR:Alureon-K [Rtk]. My computer keeps on crashing during Windows boot-up and it reboots on itself every time I tried to open any programs. MBR:Alureon-K [Rtk] is also redirecting my Internet explorer to other web sites. Since the infection, I notice that some of my folders are missing. All icons on my desktop are lost, also shortcuts on my start menu. The virus hides and deletes important things on my PC.

My computer is Dell Inspiron, Core2Duo E8300 with 2GB of RAM. It has Windows XP installed and with Avast Anti-virus. I only use Internet Explorer to browse the web and so far, I never download any free software. I am still point blank how did I acquire MBR:Alureon-K [Rtk].

Download aswMBR. This is a free rootkit remover from Avast.
    http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm

    1. Save the file on your desktop.
    2. Once the download is complete, double-click on “aswMBR.exe” to run the program.
    3. Click on the “Scan” button to start detecting rootkit Trojan on your computer.
    4. Click on “Save log” button to have a copy of the diagnostic logs.
    5. This tool is designed to remove MBRoot and Whistler, depending on the type of infection it can detect; corresponding “Fix” button will be active once the scan is done.
    6. Click FixMBR or Fix to start cleaning the computer.

If fixing does not solve your rootkit problem, open a discussion on Avast forum and post the log file you have save earlier.
